Personality: Knuckles is a curious series of contrasts. This incarnation of Knuckles is highly gullible, falling for the enemy's lies over and over and growing frustrated with Sonic. He seems to dislike Sonic more than Eggman, since he is repeatedly willing to believe Eggman over Sonic. Cosmo naively and sweetly suggested that Knuckles likes to see the good in people and give them more chances. The problem with this theory is that he certainly doesn't extend such feelings to Sonic. More than being a clash of personalities, he downright seems to dislike Sonic to fall for Eggman's lies. Nevertheless, he is capable of putting these feelings aside to fight a shared threat.
Knuckles is impulsive and quick to anger. He will punch first, ask questions later (or not at all). Many is the time when he will attack Sonic due to some misunderstanding and they will have a knock-down, drag-out fight. He refuses to listen when Sonic tries to explain or talk about the problems, preferring to keep tearing up the scenery as long as his anger burns bright. The other characters are so used to this that they usually yawn and sigh and don't interfere.
Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald and takes this very seriously. In season 3 he grudgingly allows it to be used to power their spaceship, but is always on hand in case of trouble. Prior to the series, he spent long, lazy days just relaxing and looking after the Emerald come rain or shine. Being torn away from his duty angers and stresses him. This Knuckles' backstory is not fully shown or told, but he was a loner prior to the series opening and it takes him time to warm up to being around anyone. Over the course of their adventures, he loosens up somewhat more on this, but he is still being made fun of by the scripts in season 3 for his seriousness. He is also very socially awkward and can offend without meaning to, especially when it comes to Rouge the Bat. Several times he has angered her by accident with a foolish comment.
In spite of his faults, at other times Knuckles is honestly very good at dealing with problems, especially if he can take charge. In episode 17, Knuckles is the star of an adventure in Southeast Asia. He meets a man named Hawk and they tangle with criminals after a Chaos Emerald. Knuckles shows resourcefulness and good thinking, not naively believing the criminals trying to trick him and also being aware of a homing device they have placed on the wall. He gets Hawk to play along in saying silly things into it and then screams into it, knocking the listening bad guy over from the force of the yell. This gives them time to escape.
Somewhat surprisingly, Knuckles has a good sense of humor. He is very capable of snark and sarcasm in both good and bad moods. Sometimes he will express such gems as, "I'm actually a big fan of gravity," when invited to join some gravity-defying beings in a circus act.
Knuckles grows to be a very loyal friend during the series, repeatedly getting into danger to protect others. During peaceful times, he can actually be calm and easygoing and even cheerful, although this can sometimes lead to him blurting something offensive and in any case, never seems to last long. But he is overall a good person and definitely someone valuable to have on one's side.
Abilities: Knuckles is named for his very sharp knuckles, which he can use to punch through walls, trees, rocks, or gems. He is also capable of digging them into a surface such as a wall or rock and climbing up or down.
Being able to punch through so many thick objects, Knuckles also has super strength. He can lift the Master Emerald, which is nearly as tall as him and far wider, with incredible ease and even run with it held high above his head.
Personal Item: Shovel Claws? They are metal claws he affixes on his hands to help him dig.
